You should know that Canada is a country that is particularly attentive to the needs of nature. He is particularly committed to environmental preservation and sustainable development. The country has several protected nature reserves where many animal species live. Whether along rivers and lakes, in urban areas or in the middle of the forest, you will have the opportunity to admire the great diversity of Canadian wildlife.
Here are the wild animals of Canada.
Canada: incredible wildlife to discover with the wild animals of Canada
The province of Alberta became especially known during the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. This province in Western Canada is best known for its wildlife, despite its unique environmental diversity: rocky mountains, pre-Alpine hills, etc.
Canadians refer to it as “Wildlife”. However, not all wildlife in Western Canada presents the same degree of “Wildlife”. This is especially the case, since some animals are not easy to find in national parks. Others may even be desired.
In order to observe Canada's different emblematic species more closely, it is advisable to visit Canada's many national parks:
- Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan;
- Yoho National Park, British Columbia;
- Terra Nova National Park, Newfoundland and Labrador;
- Jasper National Park, Alberta;
- Ivvavik National Park, Yukon.

The Beaver
The beaver is certainly Canada's most emblematic animal. It is considered a true symbol of the country's economic growth; the beaver is even visible on 5 cent coins. It can be observed in Prince Albert National Park in Saskatchewan.
The beaver is a herbivorous animal belonging to the Castoridae family. Compared to other emblematic mammals of Canada, the beaver is particularly light, weighing only 16 to 35 kg. On the other hand, it can reach a size of more than 1.3 meters as an adult. Which earned it the title of Canada's largest rodent.
You should know that the beaver is primarily a nocturnal animal. Additionally, he is known to be a great architect with his various hydraulic feats. It is particularly considered to be a “useful” animal, since it creates wetlands thanks to its dams, which attracts other animal species. The beaver is then a major player in the survival of many species, such as beetles which cannot survive far from bodies of water created by beavers.
Conversely, dams built by beavers can represent an obstacle to the migration of certain species of fish and molluscs.
The caribou
The caribou is a deer native to the arctic and subarctic regions of Europe, Asia and North America. It is easily recognized with its dark brown color and its majestic horns. Caribou in Canada are classified into 3 categories: tundra caribou, Peary caribou and woodland caribou. Every province in Canada is home to one of these categories.
Generally, caribou have a size and weight that vary depending on the subspecies from which they come. Males can weigh between 125 to 275 kg, while females rarely exceed 90 to 139 kg. At birth, this species weighs between 5 to 9 kg.
The grizzly bear
The grizzly bear is a large omnivorous mammal that is as beautiful as it is dangerous. It is found in the province of British Columbia, but also in Alberta, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories during the spring and summer seasons.
Belonging to the Ursidae family, the grizzly bear impresses with its size and massive musculature. It is also considered one of the strongest animals in the world.
In size, it can be up to 3 meters long and it can weigh up to more than 300 kg. And even though it seems heavy at first, the grizzly can run up to 66 km/h. Enough to discourage the smart guys.
Elk
The elk or Canadian deer is the largest of the noble deer Cervus elaphus. Of all the deer species in Canada, only the moose is larger than the elk.
An elk measures approximately 1.5 meters high and 2.5 meters long. Very heavy, it can weigh between 300 and 350 kg, although some large males can go up to 500 kg at the end of summer, before the breeding period. Females are much smaller, with a maximum height of 1.3 meters and an adult weight of around 250 kg.
Generally living in Western Canada, elk can be observed all year round in the Omega Wildlife Park.
The Canadian lynx
In the boreal forest region, you can observe a species of wild cat unique to Canada: the Canadian lynx. Possessing snowshoe-like legs, the Canada lynx hunts skillfully in the snow and feeds mainly on hares, ducks and young deer.
With its retractable claws, it is able to climb trees and is particularly comfortable in the water when it is necessary to catch fish.
The size of this large wild cat varies widely. It can be the size of a domestic cat, or it can be six times the size of the latter. The Canada lynx is one of only three species of lynx in the world: Lynx canadensis (Canadian lynx), Lynx lynx (Eurasian lynx) and Lynx pardinus (Iberian lynx). Each of these species has a small head, ears topped with tufts of hair, a heavy body, long legs and a short tail.
However, you should know that it is mandatory to apply for an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) before being able to travel to Canadian territory. To obtain this authorization, you will need to provide a valid passport issued by a visa-exempt country, a credit card and an active email address. You will also need to pay a fee of 7 Canadian dollars. The approved eTA remains valid for a maximum period of five years.
