Maple syrup is one of Canada’s most iconic sweet treats, loved for its unique flavour and natural origin. However,...
How to compose a real Canadian brunch
The Canadian brunch: what to prepare?
Brunch is basically a fairly hearty meal. The quantity of food and drinks to be provided depends mainly on the number of guests. Both sweet and savory are provided.
What makes the beauty of a brunch is the diversity of what you will offer. So take care to prepare at least two different things, whether hot drinks, juices, breads, dishes or desserts.
The Canadian version, cousin of the American, is rich in proteins, breads, sugars and fruits.
Finally, who says Canadian brunch necessarily says maple syrup. With pancakes, crepes or something else, it will be the food not to forget for this occasion.
Breakfast drinks
The hot drinks that we usually take in the morning are essential. We offer infusions, tea or coffee, but also chocolate or hot milk to our guests. To go further into the Canadian side, why not offer a tea maple Or with cranberries? It should be noted, however, that Canadians love coffee in all its forms.
Brunch is a meal that lasts several hours, we discuss while eating quietly. To keep your drinks hot, serve them in thermoses. This will save you from having to get up every time to warm them up.
Some of your guests might like their drinks ice cold, so why not create a bar area for that purpose during your Canadian brunch? Provide plenty of cold coffee, ice cubes, whipped cream and caramel syrup. Put all this on a table for your guests to prepare their drinks. All you have to do is supply your bar from time to time!
The juices
Easy to drink and thirst-quenching, juices appeal to everyone. Orange, apple, or grape: offer some classics for your brunch. Also plan for Icranberry us for the Canadian side.
There is another drink that Canadians really appreciate for brunch. It's Clamato, a rather special tomato juice that contains clam juice and spices. This very popular drink in Canada is the basis of one of their national cocktails, the Bloody Caesar - with or without alcohol. It's simply a Bloody Mary with Clamato instead of tomato juice.
cooked eggs
For the eggs, it's up to you to see what suits you best depending on the number of guests. Scrambled eggs, fried or in an omelette, can be made in large quantities and are therefore perfect for large tables. If you are not too many, you can embark on more complex cooking, such as poached eggs. Plan a hollandaise sauce and you can offer your poached eggs Benedict.
Meats
Much like in the United States, bacon is a staple of breakfast and brunch. There is still a big difference between the bacon of the two countries: the Canadian version is less fatty and contains more meat. It comes in the form of circular slices and is an essential ingredient in Eggs Benedict. Pork, turkey or Strasbourg sausages will also be perfect for a Canadian brunch. Smoked salmon will also find its place perfectly on your table.
Pancakes, crepes and more
Pancakes, crepes, waffles, pancakes or French toast: delicious kinds of bread that will be perfect with maple syrup. It can also be served with whipped cream, jam, chocolate, honey, etc. Muffins are also a good idea for brunch.
To bring more of Canada to your guests' plates, you can add dried blueberries (but previously rehydrated) in pancake, waffle or muffin batter.
Savory waffles are also very popular in Canada, why not let your guests discover them? The variations are numerous: with cheese and bacon, with vegetables and salmon, with fine herbs or even the pizza waffle!
Breads and toasts
Plan several kinds of bread if you are going to be many: bagels, toasted bread, wholemeal bread, brioche, etc.
Make long slices of country bread to be able to grill them and make toast afterwards. For example, you can prepare avocado, egg, chicken or bacon toast. Salmon is widely consumed in Canada and is delicious on toast with fresh cheese.
The vegetables
To balance the brunch, plan some raw and cooked vegetables. Prepare mashed avocado, salted, with lemon and seasoning for everyone to spread on toast. Salads - lettuce or a mixture of different vegetables - bring fiber, vitamins and beautiful colors to the plates.
The potato is part of the traditional Canadian breakfast. They are mainly found in stir-fries or in hash browns, to accompany proteins. For brunch, you can also prepare boiled potatoes, boiled potatoes, steamed potatoes or baked potatoes.
Baking is also a way to prepare a good quantity of vegetables without too much effort once the dish is in the oven. Avoid heavy gratins and opt instead for frittatas or vegetable quiches without dough, which are as delicious as they are easy to prepare.
The fruits
They are served raw for their vitamins and so that their colors brighten up the table. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, pears, apples, grapes, bananas: you can also make a nice gourmet fruit salad. To sweeten it, add the juice of an orange and a hint of syrup.
Baked fruit, in a pie, cake or other type of pastry, is delicious and appeals to everyone. You can make a blueberry cheesecake, a red fruit pavlova or a sugar pie to end the meal on a sweet note. We will accompany the desserts with a coffee, a small drop of ice cider or of ice wine to end a Canadian brunch in style!
