Top 10 ecological initiatives in Canada for a sustainable future
The Quebec Ecological Corridors Initiative (IQCE)
The Quebec Ecological Corridors Initiative, or IQCE, is a program which consists of creating ecological corridors to strengthen the natural ecosystem of different regions of Quebec. Currently, this project is implemented by 10 organizations from the 11 regions of Quebec and promotes a collective approach to land use planning to increase the conservation of natural environments.
The concept of IQCE is very simple: create ecological corridors to allow the different inhabitants of a natural space (animals and plants) to move from one area to another without impacting human activities. To achieve this, the actors of this project (including experts of all kinds, provincial cross-border partners) will focus on creating synergy between all its elements to guarantee their cohesion.
Various strategies considered priorities will then be applied, including the protection, restoration and stewardship of corridors; the development and sustainable management of the territory as well as the installation of ecological road solutions.
Electrobac
The Electrobac project allows citizens of Quebec and Montreal to recycle their small electronic devices. To do this, simply place them in smart metal containers similar to garbage bins. The Eletrobac bins can accommodate cables, chargers, ink cartridges, USB keys, peripherals, tablets, MP3 players, mobile phones and any other small electronic gadget.
In order to maximize their output, the bins are placed in strategic and particularly busy locations. We find them in offices, in grocery stores, in schools, in shopping centers and in shopping centers. The devices obtained as part of this collection will be sent to centers certified by the Recycler Qualification Office (BQR). They will then be processed according to industry norms and standards, in accordance with the requirements of ARPE-Québec.
Aquartis
Aquartis is a Canadian company specializing in gray water recycling. Its expertise allows it to develop technologies that adapt to all uses, whether for residential areas, commercial areas or industrial areas.
Being a true pioneer in this field, this Canadian company has worked to develop reliable, efficient and secure solutions. It mainly works on 4 categories of water: rainwater, gray water, mixed wastewater and industrial water. Moreover, although it is not drinkable, the liquid which will be obtained after the filtering process will be odorless and colorless. Additionally, it will also comply with the NSF-350 standard.
It can thus be used to supply toilets, indoor and outdoor washing devices, irrigation systems as well as all household and industrial maintenance devices requiring water. Finally, whatever their sources, Aquartis teams also guarantee that the water they treat does not present any risk to the health of their users.
Polystyvert Inc.
Polystyvert Inc. is a Canadian company headquartered in Montreal. Its goal is to recycle polystyrene, which is also known as styrofoam or styrofoam. Being a material particularly used in Canada, it is found in large quantities in waste and in landfills.
This is where the Polystyvert Inc teams come into action. Thanks to its revolutionary technology, they have managed to create a dissolution process which is intended to be effective on all types of polystyrene, whether expanded, extruded or injected. In addition, the product that will be obtained will then be used to design high quality and perfectly reusable polystyrene.
Polystyvert's innovative recycling initiative offers many ecological benefits. You should know that, most of the time, polystyrene is not recycled due to its high contamination rate. As a result, manufacturers often tend to bury used products and create virgin materials from petroleum. However, thanks to Polystyvert Inc, it is now possible to obtain high quality polystyrene through recycling.
Mutual Aid Friends of Montreal
Entraide Les Ami(e)s de Montréal is a project that allows people in need to remodel their homes at a lower cost. Its operation is based on the collection of furniture and household items that the owners no longer want. These will then be reused to help those who cannot afford to buy new. Depending on the case, they can be sold at ridiculous prices or simply offered free of charge.
In addition to helping the most deprived and reducing social inequalities, L'Entraide Les Ami(e)s de Montréal is also an ecological association. By promoting the recycling of old furniture, it establishes itself as a barrier against overconsumption and excessive exploitation of natural resources.
Kotmo
The Kotmo boutique specializes in the design and sale of eco-responsible promotional products. Since its creation in 2014, it has strived to promote certain values that benefit both its customers and the environment. This is particularly the case for excellence, commitment, innovation and empathy.
Thanks to its involvement, Kotmo is the only Quebec promotional item manufacturing company to have B Corp certification. It also won the “Best for the World Community” distinction due to its nature-friendly sourcing method.
Velvet Mustache
Velvet Mustache is a boutique specializing in the design and marketing of soft toys and cushions with animal emblems. Since 2007, it has distinguished itself by its ability to offer products with a contemporary and unique style.
Velvet Mustache is also widely talked about for its commitment to environmental protection. The manufacturing and assembly process for its soft toys has been designed to limit waste as much as possible. In addition, a large part of the residue obtained will be reused instead of being thrown away.
Vertal Inc.
Vertal Inc. is a firm that specializes in the design and distribution of revolutionary composting machines. Unlike those of its competitors, the products obtained through this company's composters are completely odorless. It thus contributes to transforming food residues and waste into resources with high added value.
Transformation
La Transformerie is an organization based in Montreal that works to limit food waste. To achieve this, she practices “dumpster diving”. Its members go around to grocery stores and partner businesses to collect unsold items and sort them.
Thus, products that are still considered edible will be redistributed to the La Petite-Patrie Resource and Community Action Center and to the Parents' Maisonnette. Overripe fruits, on the other hand, will be transformed into a spread. However, what remains will not be thrown away and will go into the compost.
Renaissance
Renaissance is an organization that works in the social and professional reintegration of the needy. In order to finance its actions, it appeals to the generosity of Quebecers through the collection of physical donations (clothing, toys, books, etc.). These will then be resold as second-hand goods while the income generated will be reinvested at 100 % in their program.
