Maple syrup is one of Canada’s most iconic sweet treats, loved for its unique flavour and natural origin. However,...
The health applications of maple water
Maple water: what is it?
This is the maple sap present in the tree in early spring. This sap is naturally sweetened for a fairly short period of time called the sugaring season. The liquid that is extracted at this time is rich with the nutrients that have been stored in the tree all winter. The tree will also use them to regenerate itself.
It is this same water that is then transformed - traditionally in sugar shacks - to obtain maple syrup and other maple products.
Maple water has been consumed for millennia by First Nations peoples, but it only began to be marketed in 2014. Moreover, to be able to be marketed and consumed without danger, maple water must be stabilized before being packaged. The NAPSI certification (Natural, Authentic, Pure, Sterile and Integral) was introduced in 2013 by maple syrup producers in Quebec. This certification or organic certification guarantees pure and unrefined maple water. It is a popular drink in Europe, but also in Japan, Korea or Australia
The benefits of maple sap
Maple water is full of health benefits, in addition to being delicious to drink. Low in calories, it is also low in sugars (2 %). It contains between 95 and 97.5 % of water and about forty vitamins, antioxidants and minerals. In particular, it contains potassium, calcium, zinc and manganese. As a reminder, the latter is a mineral that must be taken from the diet, because it is not naturally produced by the body. It contributes to good bone health, reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, fights inflammation and stabilizes blood sugar levels.
Among the notable compounds found in it, some are naturally produced by plants. They especially protect the body from stress and oxidative damage.
Maple water also contains polyphenols and other antioxidants that work together to purify and protect the body from inflammation. They also have the effect of slowing down the aging process.
It contains essential prebiotics for good digestive health: they serve as food for the probiotics. These are none other than the good microbes present in the intestines.
Finally, electrolytes are minerals that keep the body hydrated. They are essential for those with an active lifestyle. Maple water is rich in electrolytes.
To strengthen the immune system
Maple sap contains certain compounds that help develop and maintain a strong immune system. These are prebiotics, antioxidants and zinc. The great moisturizing power of maple water also contributes to strengthening the body's immune defences.
Anti-inflammatory
The phenolic compounds that maple sap contains help reduce damage caused by free radicals. As a reminder, these lead to inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease, irritable bowel syndrome, etc.
For digestion
The oligosaccharides in maple water serve to feed the good bacteria in the digestive system, such as lactobacilli. Lesions can appear in the digestive circuit and in the stomach due to overconsumption of certain non-steroidal analgesics, such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Alcohol consumption can also cause the proliferation of H. pilorides bacteria, which also causes lesions in the digestive system and in the stomach. Studies have shown that drinking maple water is sometimes more effective than taking certain medications in calming the attacks caused by these two problems.
Stabilize blood sugar levels
This action is made possible by the manganese very present in maple sap and also by the abscisic acid it contains. Abscisic acid stimulates the production of insulin by pancreatic cells. It also increases the receptivity of fat cells to insulin. Thus, consuming maple water could particularly help people with type 2 diabetes, as well as people suffering from obesity-related inflammation.
For sportive people
Maple water is a drink packed with electrolytes, just like coconut water. It is ideal for active people, as a lot of electrolytes are lost with sweat. It also contains many minerals.
It hydrates twice as fast and better than water. Upstream of training, it prepares for effort like a sports drink. In comparison to the latter, it does not have as much sugar or calories. Its consumption would also improve the oxygen consumption by the body. It would then help recovery after exercise, in particular by reducing muscle inflammation.
Fight sugary drink addiction
Low in sugar and calories, maple water is nevertheless slightly sweet. This makes it a good substitute for people who have difficulty quitting sugary drinks. Maple water facilitates the transition to a diet without or with very few sugary drinks by providing a slight boost when you feel a craving for sugars. In addition, it is very good for your health, unlike the addictive drinks typically found on the market.
Fight against aging
Its polyphenols and antioxidants have demonstrated an action to prevent aging and diseases related to the latter. It would also improve bone health thanks to its polyphenols, and would ensure better absorption of calcium. Its calcium and manganese are also associated with healthy bones. Koreans have been drinking maple sap for years. They call it “gorosoe”, translating to “tree good for the bones”
Drinking maple water regularly would also boost mental health and generally improve the quality of life.
Other Notable Health Applications of Maple Water
Studies are underway to determine if its polyphenols have cancer-preventive properties. It would also be recommended to drink it before an evening that is expected to be drunk. This would limit the feeling of hangover the next day.
