How to Study in Canada: Steps and Tips
The preparation phase
You will need to start by finding out carefully before starting any process. We always advise finding the university or college of your choice and taking the necessary steps at least a year in advance.
Choose your course
Start by researching the courses and programs that interest you. You will have to contact a Designated Educational Establishment (EED). To do this, you can take a look at the websites of this type of establishment.
For a broader overview of the possibilities, search the official university study in Canada website. However, you should know that the major Canadian cities are those where the options in terms of program and curriculum will be the most numerous.
If you wish to continue your studies in French, we advise you to look in the province of Quebec, the only Canadian province to be French-speaking. Shop around at the different universities and colleges that offer the programs that interest you and find out about tuition costs. Once you have found the establishment(s) that interest you, take a closer look at their respective conditions.
Know the university conditions
Admission requirements are different for international students. Universities always ask for a copy of your transcripts, certificates or diplomas. You may also be required to prove your level of English or French. To do this, you will need to present a certification such as IELTS or TOEFL. Please note that if you join an English-speaking university, the English test is a mandatory step.
Please note, each establishment has its own calendar of dates for university registrations.
Gather the requested papers
Make sure you gather all the required documents. If necessary, include a letter of recommendation from a professor or potential employer. Also prepare your cover letter, including your best arguments. Explain why you chose this establishment, and how it can help you achieve your study goals. Also say why you chose Canada and if you plan to continue to stay there later.
Ensure your admission application
Find some tips here to put all the chances on your side.
Scholarship fees
If the costs of tuition fees are beyond your reach, find out about scholarship schemes and financial aid for foreign students. The Canadian government or certain educational establishments sometimes offer them subsidies under certain conditions. There are also other financing options such as student loans. If this is your only option, it may be worth the risk. You will in fact have the possibility of staying another 3 years in the region to start working. This will help you pay off your student loan on your own. If you follow this path, you may even be able to take advantage of permanent residency within a decade of completing your studies.
Submit your admission application
Now that you have all the necessary documents in your possession, you can apply online. Strictly follow the instructions specific to the chosen establishment and carefully check the delivery deadlines to avoid unpleasant surprises. Our advice would be to do it several months in advance to give yourself time to prepare properly. You will then need to stay connected to follow the progress of your request in order to be notified of updates concerning the status of your project.
Preparing for your arrival in Canada
Obtaining official permission to study legally is the final step. If your application has been accepted by a Canadian establishment, you have successfully completed half the journey. You now need to obtain a study permit from IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada). To do this, you must provide them with the documents that attest to your eligibility: the acceptance letter from the university, a copy of your bank statement (to prove that you have the financial means), your medical insurance, your passport and a family information sheet. Other documents may possibly be added to the list. Be punctual in sending your documents.
You will likely be asked to interview with an IRCC officer. If this happens, make sure you have the curriculum for your study project inside out. The best way to succeed in the interview is always to prepare for it.
Find out beforehand about the documents required for entry into Canada. It appears that the visa or electronic travel authorization will be produced when you apply for the study permit. To avoid any disappointment, always choose to find out in advance.
Once you are sure you can enter the country, book your plane ticket. We do not recommend taking it before you have received your authorization to study.
Would you like to work alongside your university studies? See if your study permit allows you to do so. If so, you will be allowed to work once you begin your studies. Please note, however: you can work on the campus of your educational establishment without a work permit under certain conditions.
