Canadians consider nature to be a key part of their national identity: the different species of fauna and flora are renowned for their natural abundance. So, you are planning a travel to Canada for your next vacation? Here are the ten emblematic animals of this country that you cannot miss during your stay.

The caribou

The caribou is a deer. It is easily recognized by its dark brown color. Its neck, mane and belly are creamy white. Caribou in Canada are classified into three categories: barren-ground caribou, Peary caribou and woodland caribou. In fact, each Canadian province is home to one of these categories.

In general, these animals have different sizes and weights depending on the subspecies to which they belong. Thus, males reach an approximate weight of 125 to 275 kg, while females weigh 90 to 139 kg and newborns 5 to 9 kg. Among ruminants, it is the most symbolic in Canada. It can be observed from January to December.

The grizzly bear

The grizzly bear is an omnivorous mammal. It belongs to the Ursidae family. Brown in color, it is one of the most powerful animals in the world.

The grizzly bear is large and impressive thanks to its massive musculature. In fact, its size can reach up to 3 m long and it can weigh up to 300 kg and more. When it runs, its speed is about 66 km/h even if it seems heavy. Females are generally weaker than males. This animal can be seen from June to October.

Canada is home to nearly half of the world's polar bears (about 16,000 species). They are an icon of this country's wildlife heritage, as they hold a very important place for Canadians.

The polar bear is an omnivorous mammal with a thick layer of fat and a large fur coat that protects it from the cold. It has a short tail and small ears, with a small, streamlined head and an elongated body.

If you want to see this animal, you will have to go to its territories (in Churchill). Indeed, unlike the Grizzly, this animal does not wander in the forest. You can see them between October and November.

The Canadian Lynx

In the boreal forest region, there is a wild cat, the Canada lynx. In appearance, it resembles a very large domestic cat. It has short but wide feet and long legs. It has light gray fur, while its undercoat is brown and its ear tufts and the tip of its tail are black. Finally, its claws are retractable and its large eyes and ears help it hunt.

The beluga

Known as white whale, the beluga is an easily recognizable marine mammal. Indeed, it looks like a dolphin. It is large with a non-fused neck and a small head disproportionate to the rest of its body. Its skin is very thick and its fins are very large. Its teeth are very sharp.

It should be noted that for belugas, newborns are brown and sometimes dark gray in color. It is only between six and eight months that they begin to fade to white.

The beaver

The beaver is a herbivorous animal.. Compared to other iconic mammals of Canada, this one is light, weighing only 16 to 35 kg. On the other hand, its size can reach up to 1.3 m. It is considered the largest rodent in Canada. The color that dominates its body is reddish brown. However, its coat is dark.

The beaver lives at night (nocturnal). It shelters in a semi-aquatic place thanks to its thick insulating fur. In addition, its nostrils and ears are equipped with valves that allow it to resist underwater. Its eyes are also equipped with a small transparent layer that allows it to see underwater. This animal is famous for its small constructions: huts, canals, dams, etc.

This bird often nests near a body of water such as lakes, marshes, ponds, river banks, etc. The head, beak, neck and tail of this animal are completely black while the other parts of its body are all white. This goose can fly at a speed of 100 km/h and can cover up to 1,000 km in less than a week. You can observe them in spring (April) and autumn (October) during their migration.

The moose is a large deer that measures up to 2 m. Very heavy, its weight reaches 800 kg. You will find a million moose in Canada.

This animal is easy to spot, as it can be found on the side of the road. However, you can also observe them in the different parks such as Gros Morne for example. The best time to see them is between June and October.

The Elk

Also called elk or Canadian deer, it is an animal with light brown fur. Its head, neck and legs are darker than the rest of its body. It has a small hump between the shoulder blades. Its size can reach 2.5 m long and 1.50 m high. Very heavy, it can weigh up to 300 kg.

Elk live in the forest and are usually found in Western Canada.

You can see elk all year round if you visit Omega Wildlife Park. Otherwise, you can see them from May to October when you go out if you are lucky.

The Monarch Butterfly

The Monarch Butterfly is easily recognizable because its wings are orange, veined with black. They are very powerful little butterflies.

Every fall, monarch butterflies leave southern Canada for the mountain forests of Mexico, where they winter. This migration is one of the longest insect migrations in the world, covering distances of up to 5,000 km.
