Chocolate and potato cake recipe
History
This unique Canadian cake recipe comes to us from Brunswick. As its name suggests, this preparation combines the sweet flavor of chocolate and potato. The latter was introduced to Canada by Spanish monks in 1534. They cultivated it for its medicinal virtues. For their part, the Klondike settlers faced major fires. They used cocoa butter to treat cuts. They were drinking a nice cup of hot chocolate after a hard day at work. These two ingredients were therefore used to soothe ailments. Today, they are joining forces to prepare a succulent Quebecois cake.
Ingredients :
- 125 ml melted butter or margarine
- 250 ml granulated sugar
- 2 eggs
- 5 ml of vanilla
- 250 ml buttermilk
- 250 ml mashed potatoes
- 425 ml of flour
- 85 ml cocoa powder
- 5 ml baking powder
- 3 ml of baking soda
- 3 ml ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon of salt
For the chocolate sauce
- 85 ml of cocoa
- 45 ml of flour
- 250 ml of sugar
- 30 ml of butter
- 10 ml of vanilla
Preparation :
You can start your preparations with the chocolate sauce. To do this, put the various ingredients in a small saucepan and pour two cups of boiling water (little by little) while stirring. Cook this fusion over medium heat and stir to obtain a thick and smooth texture. Then remove from the heat and add 10 ml of vanilla and 30 ml of butter.
Then move on to preparing the cake. You can beat the sugar and butter in a bowl before adding your eggs one by one. Then pour in the vanilla. In another small bowl, mix the mashed potatoes with the buttermilk until smooth. Add to the first mixture before beating.
Then use a medium bowl to stir the remaining six items. Add this mixture to the first mixture. Beat everything for one minute at medium speed.
Pour the mixture obtained into a mold that you have greased beforehand. Bake the cake at a temperature of 175 degrees. Cooking will take you around 40 minutes. Stick a toothpick in your cake and if it comes out clean, you can turn off the oven. Let cool before cutting into pieces. Serve with the chocolate sauce. Don't hesitate to enjoy this succulent pastry with a nice cup of tea on the side.
