Simple California roll recipe
History
Makis come in different varieties in Japan. We have cucumber, radish, shrimp makis… In France, we even find strawberry or chocolate makis. Across the Atlantic, we have the famous California Roll. We all know that maki is not native to Japan, but even more, we easily recognize it thanks to the sheet of seaweed that covers it. Rice is often placed in the heart. Be careful, because the California roll does not come from California either. In fact, he was born in Canada. This Canadian culinary specialty was created by Hidezaku Tojo, who is certainly from Japan. At that time, sushi and maki were still little known. Indeed, purists refused to eat raw fish. Tojo thus had the idea of placing the sheet of dried seaweed or nori inside. It therefore went unnoticed and the concept was accepted. The California roll originated in Vancouver in the 1970s.
Ingredients
- 4 sheets of nori
- 300 g smoked or raw salmon
- 250g sushi rice
- Two tablespoons of sugar
- Two tablespoons of rice vinegar
- A teaspoon of salt
- A lawyer
- Wasabi
- Sesame seeds
- Soy sauce
Preparation
To begin, prepare the rice by rinsing it in water until its rinse water turns a light color. Drain your rice and pour it into 30cl of boiling water. Let it boil for two minutes. Reduce heat and cover. Add another 10 minutes of cooking. Brown the salt, sugar and vinegar in a pan and let it boil. Add everything to the rice and mix.
Then prepare the California rolls by already peeling the avocado to remove its pit. Cut it into thick strips and cut your salmon into sticks.
On the nori sheet, spread a centimeter of rice and add sesame seeds. Turn the nori sheet over to place the rice in the hollow of the roll. Spread the wasabi evenly in a fairly thin layer. Place the avocado sticks lengthwise and add your salmon sticks. Roll your californias tightly and moisten the nori sheet to hold everything tightly. Cut the roll into small pieces (approximately 8 pieces). Serve with soy sauce and wasabi.
To give your California rolls even more flavor, why not try flavor mixes made with balsamic vinegar or mustard vinegar? Did you know that you can find these little wonders on our site “ Maple Treasures » ?
