The history of Jasper National Park in Canada.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jasper National Park, established in 1907, was the first natural park created in Canada. The park protects 249 km² of mountainous land including 13 alpine glaciers and more than 1,400 lakes and waterfalls. It is named after the town of Jasper, Alberta and British Columbia, about 130 km northwest of the city of Edmonton or about 300 km southeast of the city of Calgary. Jasper has remained a popular tourist destination since its establishment as a national park in 1930. Although it was not officially named a World Heritage Site until 1984, when it became one in the category of cultural landscapes of UNESCO.
Jasper National Park has short and long summer trails, as well as cross-country ski trails that are groomed and maintained. It also offers scenic drives along the Icefields Parkway through the mountains. Japser National Park is an ideal starting point for multi-day canoe trips into the wilderness of northern Jasper National Park. It is popular for hiking, mountaineering, rock climbing, kayaking, canoeing, horseback riding and the Peach.
In 1999, Jasper National Park of Canada was declared a World Biosphere Reserve. Jasper Park's hiking trails are rugged and challenging. Elevations range from 570m to 2740m above sea level. Some trails rise 570m to 3200m above sea level. You can hike the trail from the West Edmonton Mall (9700 Jasper Ave NW Edmonton, AB T6E 7J3). The longest way to get to the top is about 8 km if you start at Scenic Drive and try not to turn left to the 5 mile long trail north of Calgary; as east of Lake Louise. It can be done by bike, but it is a difficult course, especially in winter. If you must drive, park at the starting point and walk up with your bike. In the summer you can drive to the trailhead and start walking the trail about 1km from the parking lot. The duration of the hike is roughly 1 hour or 2 hours, depending on the length of the route.
Visit Jasper National Park of Canada
Males 13-21 years old are not permitted to hike alone due to the presence of bears. You must be accompanied by another person. Dogs are not allowed. Driving into the park from Jasper opens up a whole new world of hiking, with long, beautiful, gentle, and scenic trails. There are plenty of campgrounds in the park, but you have to reserve them well in advance. With one exception, if you want to camp at huge Lake Louise, which is quite a distance from downtown.
Although it is possible to drive through Jasper National Park of Canada, it is not recommended to do so. If you must drive, be sure to stay on the highway and don't venture onto secondary roads, as this will only slow you down and create a hazard to yourself and other wildlife. Vehicles must be fitted with snow chains during the winter months (approximately December to early May). Roads can be extremely slippery and icy during this time, so plan accordingly.
On your day of arrival (and departure, if possible), check with the visitor center in case road construction may impact your visit. It is also advisable to check the current status of the park (open or closed due to snow or other conditions) in advance on the Jasper National Park of Canada homepage or via its Twitter account. Canada's national parks are generally open year-round, but some areas may be closed due to bad weather, forest fires or flooding.

There are many hotels in the towns of Jasper and Banff, but they can fill up quickly, especially during the summer season.
