Vin Caribou is an aperitif made from an old traditional recipe. Legend has it that this beverage was created by the very first settlers who came to Quebec towards the end of the 17th century. Native American tribes of the time believed that this foreign drink contained caribou blood, thus naming it in reference to this mammal.
Its marriage of natural flavors and its alcohol content at 22.9°C will seduce you. This alcoholic drink is perfect in winter, because of the warm feeling it gives! You can serve Vin Caribou chilled, iced in a shooter, or warmed up in a cup.
And to impress your taste buds or those of your guests during the aperitif, you can also add maple syrup, a slice of citrus fruit or cinnamon. At Trésors d'Érable we offer this drink in a 750 ml bottle.
Every February, Quebecers celebrate the Quebec Winter Carnival with snow sculptures, parades and other festivities. And whoever says carnival necessarily says “a little caribou” to get into the mood, usually poured into hollow canes topped with the head of a snowman, the carnival's mascot. It is to Ti-Père, in the 1960s, that we owe the popularity of the Caribou. He used it for free to carnival volunteers who came to warm up in his cellar.
Like the majority of wines and spirits offered on our site, Caribou wine is also bottled in Quebec. A positive impact on the environment by avoiding the transport and waste of thousands of glass bottles, while promoting job creation in the region. A beneficial initiative, for everyone, and which aims to offer authentic and superior quality products.
Caribou is the iconic aperitif of the Quebec Carnival! A traditional festive drink, a blend of red wine, strong spirits and spices. Served hot in winter, it warms body and soul. This Folklore Québécois version is the authentic traditional recipe, ready to drink.
A delicious blend: Canadian red wine, strong spirits (whisky or brandy), Quebec maple syrup, traditional spices (cinnamon, clove, nutmeg). No artificial flavors, just real ingredients from the ancestral recipe. 15-17% alcohol depending on the version.
Two schools: hot in winter (warm gently, don't boil, with an orange slice), or cold in summer on ice, punch-style. The traditional glass? A small flask or mug, but in a cocktail an old fashioned glass works great. To be enjoyed slowly.
Caribou dates back to the 17th century, when fur traders and Indigenous hunters mixed caribou blood and alcohol to warm up (hence the name). The recipe was refined over the centuries, the blood replaced with red wine. Became the icon of Quebec Carnival since 1955.
Store the bottle upright, at room temperature. Once opened, drink within 3-4 months. Magic with tourtière, sugar pie, maple pancakes. Also perfect to accompany a strong cheese like bleu Bénédictin or Quebec tomme.
The perfect gift to discover a real Quebec tradition rare in Europe. Ideal for Canadian cuisine fans, winter evenings with friends, New Year's Eve. Its folkloric bottle makes it a picturesque, original gift, guaranteed to transport you. Guaranteed Christmas gift.
