Canadians see nature as a key part of their national identity: different species of fauna and flora are renowned for their natural abundance. So, are you planning a trip to Canada for your next vacation? Here are the ten emblematic animals of this country that you cannot miss during your stay.

Caribou

Caribou are deer. It is easily recognized by its dark brown color. Its neck, mane and belly are creamy white. Caribou in Canada are classified into three categories: barren-ground caribou, Peary caribou, and woodland caribou. In fact, every Canadian province has one of these categories.

In general, these animals differ in size and weight depending on the subspecies to which they belong. So, males reach an approximate weight of 125-275 kg, while females weigh 90-139 kg, and newborns weigh 5-9 kg. Among ruminants, it is the most symbolic in Canada. It can be observed from January to December.

The grizzly is an omnivorous mammal. It belongs to the Ursidae family. Brown in color, it is one of the most powerful animals in the world.

The grizzly is tall and impressive thanks to its massive musculature. Indeed, its size can reach up to 3 m long and it can weigh up to 300 kg and more. When running, its speed is around 66 km / h even though it seems heavy. Females are generally weaker than males. You can see this animal from June to October.

Canada is home to nearly half of the world's polar bears (approximately 16,000 species). They are the emblem of the wildlife heritage of this country because they hold a very important place for Canadians.

The polar bear is an omnivorous mammal with a thick layer of fat and a large coat of fur that protects it from the cold. It has a short tail and small ears, with a small, contoured head and an elongated body.

If you want to see this animal, you will have to go to its territories (in Churchill). Indeed, unlike the Grizzly, this animal does not wander in the forest. You will be able to see them between October and November.

Known as the white whale, the beluga is an easily recognizable marine mammal. Indeed, it looks like a dolphin. He is tall with an unfolded neck and a small head that is disproportionate to the rest of his body. Its skin is very thick and its fins are very large. His teeth are very sharp.

It should be noted that for beluga whales, the newborns are brown in color and sometimes dark gray. It is only between six and eight months that they begin to turn pale and turn white.

The beaver is a herbivorous animal. Compared to other iconic mammals in Canada, this one is lightweight, weighing only 16 to 35 kg. On the other hand, its size can reach up to 1.3 m. It is considered the largest rodent in Canada. The dominant color of its body is reddish brown. However, his coat is dark.

The beaver lives at night (nocturnal). It shelters in a semi-aquatic place thanks to its thick insulating fur. In addition, its nostrils and ears are equipped with valves that allow it to resist underwater. His eyes are also equipped with a small transparent layer that allows him to see underwater. This animal is famous for its small constructions: huts, canals, dams, etc.

This animal is easy to spot because it can be found on the side of the road. However, you can also observe them in the various parks such as Gros Morne for example. The best time to see them is between June and October.

Also called elk or Canadian deer, it is an animal with a light brown coat. Its head, neck and legs are darker than the rest of its body. It has a small bump between the shoulder blades. Its size can reach 2.5 m long and 1.50 m high. Very heavy, it can weigh up to 300 kg.

Elk live in the forest and are generally found in western Canada.

You will be able to see elk all year round if you visit Omega Wildlife Park. Otherwise, you can see them from May to October on your outings if you are lucky.

The monarch butterfly

The monarch butterfly is easily recognized because its wings are orange, ribbed with black. They are very powerful little butterflies.

Each fall, monarch butterflies leave the southern part of Canada for the mountainous forests of Mexico, where their wintering grounds are found. This migration is one of the longest insect migrations in the world, as the distance they cover can reach 5,000 km.
